Here are the standings:
Reeb: 47-33 Pep: 45-35 Screw: 44-36 Jemp: 44-36 Alx: 40-40 We were all even last week except for Pep who lost a game with his lone-wolf of the Raiders on Monday. It was looking so good for him early on, but hard to bet against Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. Now we're into the bye weeks so a couple less games to pick, but still a great week of football ahead. Let's pick some games. Commanders at Bears: Jemp: Bears, Reeb: Commanders, Pep: Commanders, Screw: Bears I know last week’s Thursday Night game made our eyes bleed, but this one will be way better. Sure, it might not be competitive, but there is a special beauty in watching a team win 100-0. Prediction: Commanders win 100-0 49ers at Falcons: Jemp: 49ers, Reeb: 49ers, Pep: 49ers, Screw: 49ers I can see this game going one of two ways. The Falcons could keep up their streak of staying in games and then get killed in the end by some Marcus Mariota blunders. Either that or the 49ers defense shuts down the Falcons from the jump. I think the latter is more likely, but either way, the Falcons aren’t winning this game. Prediction: 49ers win 24-10 Patriots at Browns: Jemp: Browns, Reeb: Browns, Pep: Browns, Screw: Browns I’m surprised no one is taking the Patriots after their impressive performance last week. The Browns are obviously the more talented team and should dispose of the Pats without a hitch, but this Browns team seems to have difficulty with that. The Jacoby Brissett factor has certainly played a role there, and now he plays the man who drafted him. Jacoby has never had to start a game against the Patriots before and I have a feeling Bill Belichick might have some ideas on how to force a few missteps. Maybe it doesn’t matter and he just hands the ball to Nick Chubb, but I have the Patriots squeak this one out. Prediction: Patriots win 24-20 Jets at Packers: Jemp: Packers, Reeb: Packers, Pep: Packers, Screw: Packers Zach Wilson coming into Lambeau? No problem for this guy. Zach’s performance against Miami wasn’t as great as the prior week, but he still managed to lead the team to a 40-17 win. Sure, it was against Skylar Thompson, but that’s not important. The important thing is that he now looks like an NFL quarterback, plus he has high-quality NFL talent around him. His receivers are miles ahead of the Packers’ receivers, despite a clear improvement on Green Bay’s end. Matt Lafleur seems to be able to cook up a gameplan to get his offense going earl in games now, but it tends to sputter out in the second half. I’m probably kidding myself that Lafleur and Rodgers would let this team drop two in a row to New York teams, but I believe in this Jets squad. Prediction: Jets win 27-24 Jaguars at Colts: Jemp: Jaguars, Reeb: Jaguars, Pep: Jaguars, Screw: Jaguars Yeah I understand why everyone is taking the Jags after the TNF debacle. But in fairness, the Colts did win that game while the Jags were losing to the Texans. Matt Ryan may be an abject disaster, but the Colts are still sitting at .500 with a very winnable game at home here. Jonathan Taylor may return as well, but that is very much up in the air. If not, I’m sure Phillip Lindsay and Deon Jackson can handle duties. But honestly I don’t know what to make of any of the AFC South teams so I’ll go ahead and take the Colts at home. Prediction: Colts win 20-17 Vikings at Dolphins: Jemp: Vikings, Reeb: Vikings, Pep: Vikings, Screw: Vikings Alright can’t wait to see some more of Skylar Thompson. I went back and watched his game against the Jets and he actually wasn’t terrible. I know the final score of that game was 40-17, but he had the Dolphins in position to take the lead in the early fourth quarter, and then a series of mistakes which weren’t all on him caused the Jets to run away with it. It’s not his fault the run game got stuffed on 3rd and 1 and 4th and 1 on back to back plays, or that Cedrick Wilson can’t catch a pass. However, I have to stick with my guy Kirk, even though it seems like the Vikings can’t put a full game together. It seemed like the offense was humming against the Bears, but they somehow let them back into the game. I could definitely see that happening again in Miami, but I believe the Vikings pull it out. Prediction: Vikings win 31-24 Bengals at Saints: Jemp: Bengals, Reeb: Bengals, Pep: Bengals, Screw: Bengals This one should be interesting. We’re either getting an Andy Dalton revenge game, or the return of Jameis Winston. And then we’ll see how the Saints MVP Taysom Hill factors into things. But more importantly, we’ll have to see how that Bengals o-line matches up against Cameron Jordan and company, because that could be rough. Tee Higgins is a question mark as well which makes things that much more difficult on Burrow. However, the Saints might be bold enough to leave Marshon Lattimore on an island with Ja’Marr Chase on a few plays, and that is what the Bengals have to take advantage of. I’m a little nervous about this one, but I’ll take the Bengals as well. Prediction: Bengals win 24-23 Ravens at Giants: Jemp: Ravens, Reeb: Ravens, Pep: Ravens, Screw: Ravens How the hell are the Giants 4-1? Their #1 receiver is Darius Slayton right now. They managed a 96-yard drive last week without Saquon Barkley. For most of it anyway. Brian Daboll should get coach of the year right now for this effort with this roster. But I can’t imagine he hides the Giants problems forever, and Lamar Jackson should be able to dispose of this team pretty easily. The Ravens defense is looking much better too, which is bad news for Daniel Jones. Prediction: Ravens win 30-10 Buccaneers at Steelers: Jemp: Bucs, Reeb: Bucs, Pep: Bucs, Screw: Bucs This is a rough start for Kenny Pickett. First he had Buffalo and now he has Tom Brady and the Bucs coming to town. He had no chance last week as all he could do was watch from the sidelines as Josh Allen put on a show. Then when he got to take the field his offensive line was overwhelmed by the Bills pass rush. The Bucs haven’t shown the propensity to blow teams out of the water, and it can’t possibly be worse than last week, so I expect this week to go better, but I don’t think the Steelers have much chance of winning. Prediction: Buccaneers win 28-13 Panthers at Rams: Jemp: Rams, Reeb: Rams, Pep: Rams, Screw: Rams Matt Rhule is finally gone and in comes Steve Wilks to save the day! He’s got PJ Walker to lead the team, so what could go wrong? Honestly, Walker couldn’t be much worse than Baker so I guess let’s see what happens. Against Aaron Donald…and Jalen Ramsey… and Bobby Wagner, and … yeah I don’t think this going to go well. The Panthers best bet might just be to keep punting to the Rams with how the Rams offense is playing. They probably have a better chance of scoring on defense so that can be their strategy. Prediction: Rams win 23-0 Cardinals at Seahawks: Jemp: Cardinals, Reeb: Cardinals, Pep: Cardinals, Screw: Cardinals I am actually quite surprised no one took the Seahawks here. I love Kyler and everything but this Cardinals team has not impressed me. I know they had a chance against the Eagles last week, and Kyler could absolutely go wild against this porous Seahawks defense, but right now I trust the Seahawks offense more. It’s time to legitimately give some respect to Geno Smith. We’ve all been giving him credit for playing well, but I’m not sure if anyone actually considered he might just be pretty good? He only played two years as a starter and then lost his job thanks to some not-so-friendly fire (his own teammate punched him in the face and broke his jaw for those of you who don’t know). Now we are 8 years later and he finally got another chance and he’s taking advantage of it. Prediction: Seahawks win 31-27 Bills at Chiefs: Jemp: Chiefs, Reeb: Chiefs, Pep: Bills, Screw: Bills I’m not sure why this isn’t a primetime game. But I guess the Chiefs just had two primetime games that I can’t complain about, so I guess let Romo handle this one. It’s certainly the best matchup of the year so far, as these teams have clearly established themselves as the top two teams in the AFC. Both of these offenses are completely unstoppable when they are on form, so I think that side of the ball is a wash. However, the Bills have surprised me with the strength of their defense, which looks like one of the best units in the league. The only thing you can do against Patrick Mahomes is try to get pressure with 4, and pray, and the Bills can do both. Prediction: Bills win 34-24 Cowboys at Eagles: Jemp: Eagles, Reeb: Eagles, Pep: Eagles, Screw: Eagles Of course we need the NFC East clash on Sunday Night Football, but I guess I can’t complain when we have a 5-0 and a 4-1 team. I kind of think the Eagles are due for a loss, but not as much as I think Cooper Rush is. He has to lose a game eventually, right? We all think that it happens this week against the Eagles. Prediction: Eagles win 24-17 Broncos at Chargers: Jemp: Chargers, Reeb: Chargers, Pep: Chargers, Screw: Chargers Yeah, none of us can stomach the Broncos after the travesty on Thursday Night. I’m surprised Al Michaels didn’t just leave halfway through the game. I’m all for being aggressive when you have a good offense, but when you’re playing in the worst game of the year where no one can get into the endzone, just take the field goal there at the end. There was no shot the Colts were scoring a touchdown, and neither were the Broncos anyway. You’d think Russ would have learned his lesson there. Prediction: Chargers win 27-3 Here are the standings:
Reeb: 38-26 Pep: 37-27 Screw: 35-29 Jemp: 35-29 Alx: 31-33 Alright, much better week for the group as a whole, but I’m still at the bottom at below .500. Now I’m trying to catch up while under the weather, so let me just knock this out real quick. Let’s pick some games. Colts at Broncos: Jemp: Broncos, Reeb: Broncos, Pep: Broncos, Screw: Broncos I wouldn’t say this is the most exciting TNF game, but maybe Amazon can replay an injury 49 times to spice things up. Neither team has their dynamic young running back available, and both new quarterbacks have been disappointing. But Russ is obviously way better than Matt Ryan, who has been one of the worst quarterbacks of 2022. We are all on the same page taking the Broncos at home. Prediction: Broncos win 19-3 Giants at Packers: Jemp: Packers, Reeb: Packers, Pep: Packers, Screw: Packers I have to admit I was enjoying watch the Giants play without a quarterback. It really embodied the spirit of ProFootballJokes. Plus it put them on a level playing field with the Bears. I don’t think that will work against the Packers, but neither will running out Daniel Jones, so pick your poison. The Packers are just figuring things out right now, but they look more and more like a cohesive offense, and they get another week of practice against the Giants. Prediction: Packers win 27-13 Steelers at Bills: Jemp: Bills, Reeb: Bills, Pep: Bills, Screw: Bills Finally Mitch is gone and we get to see Kenny Pickett in action. Not sure if the ideal first start for him is against the Bills, but sure, throw him into the fire. I thought he played pretty well last week all things considered, but the Bills defense has been nasty despite the injuries in the secondary. Then of course you have to keep up with Josh Allen, which no one thinks is going to happen, but just make some fun plays and everybody who watches the Steelers will be happy. Except Mitch Trubisky. Prediction: Bills win 31-14 Chargers at Browns: Jemp: Browns, Reeb: Chargers, Pep: Chargers, Screw: Chargers I’m not really sure what to make of either of these teams. On the one hand, I love Justin Herbert and the Chargers are obviously the much more fun team. I just don’t know if they are the better team. They looked like they were going to smash the morabund Texans last week, but they somehow let them back into the game, and were in legitimate danger of giving it away if they hadn’t converted a 4th down in their own territory. But I want to take the Chargers so I’m just hoping that Keenan Allen comes back and turns their offense into what we expected in the beginning of the year. Prediction: Chargers win 31-28 Bears at Vikings: Jemp: Vikings, Reeb: Vikings, Pep: Vikings, Screw: Bears Do we still need to talk about the Bears? Justin Fields had a season-high pass completions last week with 11. It’s the first time he’s cracked double digits this year. I did say last week that the “run every play” strategy might work against the Giants, but I don’t think it works against the Vikings. Unless Kirk has a meltdown game, the Vikings should walk with this one. Prediction: Vikings win 24-7 Lions at Patriots Jemp: Lions, Reeb: Lions, Pep: Lions, Screw: Lions Kenny Pickett might not be getting the ideal matchup for his first NFL start, but Bailey Zappe certainly is. It might be the best matchup in the history of the NFL as the Lions are getting torched by anyone and everyone. Although I should mention that Zappe isn’t guaranteed to get the start as there is still a chance Mac Jones could return. I do think that is unlikely though, and I hope to god the Lions defense doesn’t give up 30 points to a Matt Patricia offense. That would be a low point for a franchise that has an 0-16 season. Prediction: Lions win 30-20 Seahawks at Saints: Jemp: Seahawks, Reeb: Saints, Pep: Saints, Screw: Seahawks I’m nervous about taking the Seahawks on the road, but there is no doubt they have been the better team through 4 weeks. Maybe if they get Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara back, it revitalizes their offense, but I’m skeptical if either of them will be fully healthy. Then again, this could be a letdown game for Geno against what is still a pretty good Saints defense. I could see him folding in the Superdome. Yeah, that feels most likely, I’ll take the Saints. Prediction: Saints win 24-19 Dolphins at Jets: Jemp: Dolphins, Reeb: Dolphins, Pep: Dolphins, Screw: Dolphins I don’t know, I’m pretty tempted to take the Jets here. I was skeptical of Zach Wilson’s debut performance when I was just catching the snippets on redzone, but after going back and watching the game, I was pleasantly surprised at how well he played. I know the smart money is on the Dolphins here, but I am feeling bullish on the Jets. Teddy B will be fine in replacing Tua, but with all the weirdness surrounding the Dolphins right now, I think the Jets get this one. Prediction: Jets win 27-24 Falcons at Buccaneers: Jemp: Bucs, Reeb: Bucs, Pep: Bucs, Screw: Bucs These Falcons keep surprising me. I’m not exactly sure how they beat the Browns last week. It sort of felt like the Browns were casually taking care of business against the Falcons and then realized at the last minute they were trailing. I think the Bucs will have more urgency, especially after they were dismantled by Patrick Mahomes. However, I thought the offense looked like the old Bucs offense, and I don’t expect Marcus Mariota to expose the defense in the same way Mahomes did. I’ll take the Bucs at home. Prediction: Buccaneers win 34-17 Titans at Commanders: Jemp: Titans, Reeb: Titans, Pep: Titans, Screw: Titans Sure Derrick Henry is back and the Titans look like a team again, but you can’t expect them to walk into FedEx and get a win. Prediction: Commanders win 100-0 Texans at Jaguars: Jemp: Jaguars, Reeb: Jaguars, Pep: Jaguars, Screw: Jaguars I feel bad watching Lovie Smith every week. It feels like he doesn’t really believe his team ever has a chance to win and he doesn’t even try to win. Granted, they did show a little fight last week against the Chargers, still with zero emotion from Lovie, but still. The Jaguars had a bit of a setback against the Eagles, but this should be a nice bounceback spot. They should be able to dispense with Davis Mills and company. Prediction: Jaguars win 24-10 49ers at Panthers: Jemp: 49ers, Reeb: 49ers, Pep: 49ers, Screw: 49ers This one could get ugly for the Panthers. The 49ers defense has made life difficult for everyone they have played so far, so imagine what they will do to this version of Baker Mayfield. It has been so hard to watch the Panthers, but it might get so bad this week that it becomes entertaining. If the Panthers score a point this week I’ll be impressed. Prediction: 49ers win 23-0 Cowboys at Rams: Jemp: Cowboys, Reeb: Rams, Pep: Rams, Screw: Cowboys Okay, congratulations to Cooper Rush for being 4-0 as a starter. But it has to come to a halt this weekend. Am I concerned about Micah Parsons against that Rams offensive line? Yes, very much so, but Aaron Donald should be able to do the same to the Cowboys line, right? I also trust Sean McVay to come up with a better gameplan than Mike McCarthy. I know it hasn’t looked great up until now, but I’ve maintained that the Rams will get it figured out at some point. I really hope it’s this week. Prediction: Rams win 20-17 Eagles at Cardinals: Jemp: Eagles, Reeb: Eagles, Pep: Eagles, Screw: Eagles The Cardinals have been anything but impressive up to this point, but they still find themselves tied for the division lead. I guess they are also tied for last in the division, so it’s not saying a whole lot. I don’t think the Eagles are a juggernaut by any means, but they might be the most complete team in football, and they should dispose of the Cardinals pretty easily here. Prediction: Eagles win 31-14 Bengals at Ravens: Jemp: Ravens, Reeb: Bengals, Pep: Bengals, Screw: Ravens Finally we are getting some good Sunday Night Football games. Chiefs Bucs last week and now a classic AFC North matchup. Lamar’s MVP campaign hit a speedbump last week as he and the offense looked stuck in the mud for the second half of their bout with the Bills. Now he goes against a Bengals defense that has shut down Mitch Trubisky, Cooper Rush, Joe Flacco, and Teddy Bridgewater. How is he supposed to compete against that? He also has the disadvantage of not having Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins to throw to, so I’ll take the Bengals on the road. Prediction: Bengals win 27-24 Raiders at Chiefs: Jemp: Chiefs, Reeb: Chiefs, Pep: Raiders, Screw: Chiefs I think Pep got us with this lone wolf a couple years ago when the Raiders beat the Chiefs in the 40-32 barnburner. However, they got smoked in their two matchups last year with an aggregate score of 89-23. That’s an average margin of victory of 33 points for the Chiefs. Maybe the Raiders can keep it closer than that, but that’s about the best I can hope for from them. Prediction: Chiefs win 38-20 Here are the standings:
Reeb: 26-22 Screw: 25-23 Pep: 24-24 Jemp: 24-24 Alx: 22-26 Not the best week in the pick’em for anyone, as we are barely above .500 as a group now. Pep had a big fall and as you can see I’m now well below .500. But I won’t let that get me down. Let’s pick some games. Dolphins at Bengals: Jemp: Dolphins, Reeb: Bengals, Pep: Bengals, Screw: Bengals I’m a little afraid of Tuanon. It feels like they have now infiltrated everywhere and they are ready to strike down anyone who badmouths Tua. Be careful who you watch your Dolphins games with. They’ll feel especially disrespected in this one since despite being the only undefeated team left in the AFC, they are now 3.5 point underdogs to a team who has only beaten the Jets. But, the Dolphins are coming off an exhausting game against the Bills in which Tua and Waddle were banged up, and have to travel on a short week to Cincinnati. It also just feels like they are due for a loss, but I’m not sure if the Bengals are the team to give it to them. Even last week it felt like they struggled to put away the Jets. But I feel like the defending AFC champs have to show something this week, so I’ll take the Bengals at home. Prediction: Bengals win 24-21 Vikings at Saints: Jemp: Vikings, Reeb: Vikings, Pep: Vikings, Screw: Vikings I’ll admit the Vikings haven’t been as impressive as I had expected they would be, but they are 2-0 in division and get this dumpster fire of a Saints team. Jameis is playing through injury, which explains why he isn’t playing his usual brand of flawless football. Alvin Kamara and Michael Thomas are banged up as well, and the defense hasn’t been nearly as good as it has been. Had it not been for a 4th quarter Falcons collapse, this team could be 0-3. I’ll take the Vikings on the road. Prediction: Vikings win 23-10 Browns at Falcons: Jemp: Browns, Reeb: Browns, Pep: Falcons, Screw: Browns Pretty impressive start for the Browns. Great news for those loyal Believeland fans rocking #4 jerseys on gameday. Hard not to root for people like that. Jacoby Brissett is doing his bit where he plays well for the first month of the season. Being able to hand the ball off to Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt doesn’t hurt either. Of course, Marcus Mariota is handing the ball off to Cordarrelle Patterson, so maybe we shouldn’t count out the Falcons. But I will anyway. Prediction: Browns win 27-20 Commanders at Cowboys: Jemp: Cowboys, Reeb: Cowboys, Pep: Cowboys, Screw: Cowboys Carson Wentz may have held the ball a little too long last week but I’m sure he’s got this against Micah Parsons and company. Easy win for the Commanders. Prediction: Commanders win 100-0 Seahawks at Lions: Jemp: Lions, Reeb: Lions, Pep: Lions, Screw: Lions No one can say the Lions haven’t been entertaining this year, except maybe Lions fans. Dan Campbell admitted after the game that he may have cost his team with some late game decision making. Maybe he needs to take a page out of Nathaniel Hackett’s book and hire a gameday decision making consultant. Then he can just stay home and watch redzone. But we all love Dan Campbell, and would hope he can get a win here against the Seahawks. Prediction: Lions win 34-17 Titans at Colts: Jemp: Titans, Reeb: Titans, Pep: Colts, Screw: Titans Great day for the AFC South on Sunday, except for the Texans, but they don’t really count. And maybe losing by only 3 points is a good day for the Texans. But each of these teams got their first win of the season, and they might need to keep winning to keep up with the Jaguars. I have no idea how the Colts ended up winning that game against the Chiefs, but somehow it happened. Matt Ryan spent half the game looking like he was 100 years old, and then out of nowhere he was able to just make a few throws that won the game. I’m not sure if that’s a recipe for Colts success though. However, I think they can lean on Jonathan Taylor at home here, and hopefully get Shaq Leonard back which changes their defense. So I’ll take the Colts in a tight one. Prediction: Colts win 23-20 Bears at Giants: Jemp: Giants, Reeb: Giants, Pep: Giants, Screw: Bears Well, one of these teams is going to be 3-1. I guess these two first-year head coaches deserve some credit because they are out here winning with nothing. Justin Fields has pretty much unilaterally been deemed the worst quarterback in the NFL right now, even with guys like Joe Flacco and Mitch Trubisky starting games. But if you’re a Fields supporter, you can say it’s been a very small sample size. Sure it’s been 3 games, but he’s only attempted 45 passes on the year. Joe Burrow attempted 53 in week 1. Yet, I think this method of hiding Justin Fields is good enough to win these types of games against bad teams. And the Giants are a bad team. Prediction: Bears win 20-17 Jaguars at Eagles: Jemp: Eagles, Reeb: Eagles, Pep: Eagles, Screw: Eagles Could these Jaguars be the real deal? We’ve called them a functional offense for a few weeks now, but maybe they deserve a little more than that. Sure, it was an injured Chargers team they beat up on, but they are starting to look like a well-oiled machine. They get these easy short passes to Christian Kirk and Travis Etienne and James Robinson is running the hell out of the ball. The defense has been solid too, so I think they could give the Eagles a run for their money in the Doug Pederson revenge game. But I’m still taking the Eagles at home. Prediction: Eagles win 27-24 Jets at Steelers: Jemp: Steelers, Reeb: Steelers, Pep: Steelers, Screw: Steelers You know that I’m tempted to take Zach Wilson here. Sure, he was awful last year, but I’m sure he’s grown into a good quarterback this offseason in between banging moms. I only ask that he outplays Mitch here, please. That’s a pretty low bar. I still don’t trust the Jets to win the game, but just some production from Zach Wilson would be nice. Especially since I have Garrett Wilson and Elijah Moore on a couple of my fantasy teams. Prediction: Steelers win 23-20 Bills at Ravens: Jemp: Bills, Reeb: Bills, Pep: Bills, Screw: Bills A battle between the early frontrunners for MVP. Josh Allen finally stumbled last week in the loss to the Dolphins. Ironic that the heat in Miami caused Josh Allen to cool off. But Lamar continued his MVP campaign with 5 touchdowns in Foxboro. However, if one of these defenses has a chance to slow down a star quarterback, it’s the Bills. The secondary in Buffalo is riddled with injuries but Sean McDermott always seems to work that out and the athleticism and depth in the front seven should present some problems. The Ravens defense has been shredded two weeks in a row by Mac Jones and Tua Tagovailoa, so I expect Josh Allen to do the same. Prediction: Bills win 35-27 Chargers at Texans: Jemp: Chargers, Reeb: Chargers, Pep: Chargers, Screw: Chargers Who would have guessed that the Chargers would be ravaged by injuries? Somehow Derwin James is their only star player who is healthy. The Texans have avoided injury to their star players, by cleverly having no star players. Davis Mills has not led the league’s most inspired offense and maybe Lovie Smith wasn’t meant to coach in the 2020s. Looks like another lost year for Houston. Prediction: Chargers win 28-10 Cardinals at Panthers: Jemp: Cardinals, Reeb: Cardinals, Pep: Cardinals, Screw: Cardinals I don’t really understand how Baker became so bad. He’s playing worse than last year when he was clearly playing injured. Is Matt Rhule the new Adam Gase where he just ruins players? If so, you gotta feel bad for Sam Darnold. His coaches are like the equivalent of Allen Robinson’s quarterbacks, until Stafford I guess. Despite a win last week, I don’t feel any better about the Panthers. I don’t feel great about the Cardinals either, but at least we know Kyler can make something out of nothing. Baker cannot. Prediction: Cardinals win 20-13 Patriots at Packers: Jemp: Packers, Reeb: Packers, Pep: Packers, Screw: Packers Is Romeo Doubs the new Packers #1 wideout? He played pretty well on Sunday, and Aaron Rodgers started to look like his old self. At least for the first two drives, then the offense kind of petered out again. But it’s still progress, and it’s gotta be better than anything a Brian Hoyer led Patriots offense can produce, so I think the Packers at home is a pretty safe bet. Prediction: Packers win 27-10 Broncos at Raiders: Jemp: Raiders, Reeb: Raiders, Pep: Raiders, Screw: Raiders Interesting that everyone is taking the only 0-3 team in the league. Somehow the Broncos’ Sunday Night performance in a win was more of an indictment on the team than the Raiders’ loss. These teams looked to be gearing up for a Super Bowl run, but things haven’t gone well for them. I guess the Broncos are 2-1 and could easily move to 3-1. But I’m with the rest of the PFJ staff, because I think the Raiders aren’t bad enough to go 0-4, and Josh McDaniels completes his revenge game. Prediction: Raiders win 20-17 Chiefs at Buccaneers: Jemp: Chiefs, Reeb: Chiefs, Pep: Chiefs, Screw: Buccaneers I’m looking forward to this game a lot more than the previous Bucs games. I knew the Bucs Cowboys and Bucs Packers were going to be defensive slugfests, but I’m a little more optimistic about this one. I’m not saying it will be a shootout, but Brady will get back Mike Evans and I expect Patrick Mahomes to be hungry after the disaster in Indy. I think Mahomes is certainly the better quarterback at this point, but I think TB12 still has some magic left to pull out a win at home. Prediction: Buccaneers win 27-24 Rams at 49ers: Jemp: Rams, Reeb: Rams, Pep: 49ers, Screw: Rams Really glad we get to see Jimmy G in primetime again. Maybe he wasn’t exactly the savior the 49ers needed. Then again, if there is one thing Jimmy G knows how to do, it’s beat the Rams. At least in the regular season. He gets them at home and I’m still not sold on this Rams team. McVay will get them right by the end of the season, but the 49ers will get them here. Prediction: 49ers win 24-20 Here are the standings:
Pep: 20-12 Reeb: 18-14 Jemp: 17-15 Screw: 17-15 Alx: 16-16 I’m right back in last place because that is where I feel most comfortable. A few desperate comebacks really ruined all of our records last week, but that is what makes the NFL so great. Let’s pick some games. Steelers at Browns: Jemp: Browns, Reeb: Browns, Pep: Steelers, Screw: Browns Well we shouldn’t get too greedy with Thursday Night Football games. That’s enough good games and now we get Mitch Trubisky and Jacoby Brissett. But at least we get to enjoy the presence of the painted logo of Brownie the Elf taking up half the field. I guess it’s a win for Trubisky that, for once, he won’t be the biggest eyesore on the field. However, I can’t get behind this Steelers team without TJ Watt. I’d love to see Kenny Pickett get out there, but I feel like Mike Tomlin is too stubborn for that. Then again, maybe losing to the Browns will knock some sense into him. Prediction: Browns win 20-10 Texans at Bears: Jemp: Bears, Reeb: Bears, Pep: Texans, Screw: Bears Neither of these teams are 0-2 and yet I feel like they are both mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. These second year quarterbacks have not taken any steps forward this year. To be fair, they are both surrounded by what would be kind to call lackluster rosters. But as bad as the Texans are, I think the Bears might be the worst team in football, so I’ll take the Texans on the road. Maybe my guy Davis Mills can rebound. Prediction: Texans win 24-21 Raiders at Titans: Jemp: Raiders, Reeb: Raiders, Pep: Raiders, Screw: Raiders I’m a little surprised we are all picking the Raiders here. While the Titans have not shown anything that makes me believe they can win this game, neither have the Raiders. Derek Carr has had his worst start to a season since probably back in 2017 when he was coming off that broken fibula. Josh McDaniels was supposed to bring creativity and structure to this offense, but he seems to have just made it worse. I still have to believe they are good enough to beat a reeling Titans team. Prediction: Raiders win 27-20 Chiefs at Colts: Jemp: Chiefs, Reeb: Chiefs, Pep: Chiefs, Screw: Chiefs The Colts may have given us this year’s worst performance on Sunday. Matt Ryan was dreadful, and the coaching gameplan left a lot to be desired. Maybe the Colts can still compete in this division when they get healthier, but I expect a massacre against the Chiefs. Mahomes should have a field day against this defense unless Shaq Leonard comes back and sparks something in this defense. And even if he does, I don’t expect it to be enough to overcome their offensive struggles. Prediction: Chiefs win 38-13 Bills at Dolphins: Jemp: Bills, Reeb: Bills, Pep: Bills, Screw: Bills Tuanon is taking victory laps all week after that 6 touchdown performance, but let’s bear in mind that Mitch Trubisky also once gave us a 6 TD game. That being said, I think Tua is much better than Mitch, and may still be a great NFL quarterback in the future. The problem is that he goes up against a currently unstoppable quarterback in Josh Allen, who through two weeks has been nearly perfect. I don’t think Tua can keep up with him, especially when he also has to contend with this Bills defense which looks nearly as good as the offense. They’ll need another heroic performance from Hill and Waddle, and even then, it might not be enough. Prediction: Bills win 38-21 Lions at Vikings: Jemp: Lions, Reeb: Vikings, Pep: Lions, Screw: Vikings Okay everyone get their Kirk Cousins jokes out of the way now. He and the Vikings looked miserable on Monday Night Football, while the Lions are tied with the Chiefs for the #2 scoring offense. D’Andre Swift looks has been fantastic, but the offense goes through Amon-Ra St. Brown, and it is working. If only their defense could catch up to the offense, I would have picked them in this game. However, I think the Vikings have too much talent to have another performance like Monday Night. They’ll rebound at home. Prediction: Vikings win 27-24 Ravens at Patriots: Jemp: Ravens, Reeb: Ravens, Pep: Patriots, Screw: Ravens Lamar Jackson is earning his money. He may have lost last week, but that certainly wasn’t on the offense. Lamar has had no problem without Hollywood Brown, and perhaps the return of JK Dobbins can spark the run game as well. We still don’t know if that will be this week, but I think they’ll be able to get past the Patriots regardless. The defense did have a total meltdown last week, but fortunately this week they don’t have to contend with Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill, and instead have to worry about Jakobi Meyers and Devante Parker. Pretty sure they can handle that. Prediction: Ravens win 27-17 Bengals at Jets: Jemp: Bengals, Reeb: Bengals, Pep: Bengals, Screw: Bengals So, the Bengals can’t screw this one up, can they? The Jets had a miracle comeback last week, but they are still the Jets. They can’t lose to Mitch Trubisky, Cooper Rush, and Joe Flacco, right? This has to be one of the worst Super Bowl hangovers we’ve ever seen. I still have some hope that the Bengals can climb out of this one, but I need them to dominate this one. They have to look sharp from the get-go for me to really buy into this team. If they lose, I think we are all probably done with them. Prediction: Bengals win 31-17 Eagles at Commanders: Jemp: Eagles, Reeb: Eagles, Pep: Eagles, Screw: Eagles I told you everyone would hype up the winner of the Eagles Vikings game as the NFC favorite. I’m a little more hesitant to buy into the Eagles quite that much. Especially when they play the Commanders this week and Carson Wentz gets to have his revenge. Prediction: Commanders win 100-0 Saints at Panthers: Jemp: Saints, Reeb: Panthers, Pep: Saints, Screw: Saints Okay, I feel like the Panthers are just a dead team walking. It’s weird to say that when they’ve been very close in each of the first two weeks, but I feel like everyone knows the coach and quarterback aren’t going to be here for very long. Baker hasn’t been that much of an improvement over Sam Darnold, and I think we are all ready to say goodbye to this team. And it’s only Week 3. Prediction: Saints win 27-13 Jaguars at Chargers: Jemp: Chargers, Reeb: Chargers, Pep: Chargers, Screw: Chargers I’m assuming Justin Herbert is going to play in this game since he didn’t even come out of the last one. I wonder if Chase Daniel every gets offended at the lengths his teams will go to avoid putting him in the game. But even with Herbert in some pain, I’m actually feeling pretty good about this Chargers team. As long as Herbert is there, the offense will be dangerous, but the defense was impressive on TNF. They essentially held Patrick Mahomes to 20 points, and it could have been less if they hadn’t overturned that interception. While the Jaguars look like a much more cohesive football team this year, I don’t think they are ready to compete with the Chargers. Unless Herbert doesn’t play, and then they can probably beat Chase Daniel Prediction: Chargers win 35-17 Rams at Cardinals: Jemp: Rams, Reeb: Rams, Pep: Rams, Screw: Rams I guess Kyler doesn’t need to study the playbook when you just throw it out and let Kyler scramble and play playground football. It would be nice if the Cardinals had other ways to move the ball, but maybe I’m asking too much of Kliff Kingsbury. I haven’t been that impressed with the Rams through two weeks, but the Cardinals seem like they need Kyler to pull a rabbit out of a hat every play, while the Rams just ask Stafford to throw the ball to Cooper Kupp, which seems more attainable. Prediction: Rams win 24-21 Falcons at Seahawks: Jemp: Falcons, Reeb: Seahawks, Pep: Falcons, Screw: Falcons Ugh, who cares? Arthur Smith says he is trying to win games, but he could’ve fooled me. In week 1 it seemed like the Falcons did everything in their power to lose the game. In week 2 it seemed like they were trying their best to make it respectable, which they did successfully as well. He shouldn’t be setting the bar so high with this lofty goal of “winning games.” Just say you’ll get Kyle Pitts more targets and everyone will be happy. No one really cares if you win. Prediction: Seahawks win 24-20 Packers at Buccaneers: Jemp: Bucs, Reeb: Bucs, Pep: Bucs, Screw: Bucs This is not a good scene for the Packers. The Bucs have a lot of weapons out on offense, but it has been their defense that has carried them to 2-0. I don’t expect much to change against the Packers who still look like a highly stoppable offense, especially for a team known for their run defense. I don’t think any of these Packers receivers can take advantage of one-on-one coverage, so I like the Bucs to win a slugfest. Prediction: Buccaneers win 22-7 49ers at Broncos: Jemp: 49ers, Reeb: 49ers, Pep: 49ers, Screw: 49ers We’ve got Jimmy G back in the fold and everyone jumps right back on the 49ers hype train. I’m tempted to pick the Broncos here, since I don’t think they are as bad as people think. They have been boring and the coaching decisions have been questionable to say the least, but I think they should be able to hang with the niners. I think time away from Jimmy has made us forget that Russ always beats him. I’ll take the Broncos at home. Prediction: Broncos win 24-23 Cowboys at Giants: Jemp: Giants, Reeb: Giants, Pep: Giants, Screw: Giants You know the Cowboys and Giants are bad when they are relegated to Monday Night Football. I’m sure this game will somehow still get ratings, but Cooper Rush vs. Daniel Jones doesn’t exactly scream “memorable game.” Then again, it’s games like this that PFJ lives for, and I just hope we get some great memes out of it. And the Giants going to 3-0 would certainly provide for plenty of material. Prediction: Giants win 17-10 Here are the standings:
Pep: 11-5 Reeb: 9-7 Jemp: 9-7 Alx: 9-7 Screw: 7-9 Pep taking the early lead in the standings thanks to his hatred of Trey Lance. And the defending champ has some ground to make up. But there is so much season left and we are all excited for it, so let’s pick some games. Chargers at Chiefs: Jemp: Chiefs, Reeb: Chargers, Pep: Chargers, Screw: Chiefs Who woulda thunk it? Patrick Mahomes is still pretty good at football. Sure, he may be down Tyreek Hill, but he still has the best tight end in football, and a host of decent receivers. Meanwhile, Justin Herbert was dropping dimes to Gerald Everett, DeAndre Carter, and some guy named Zander Horvath. Herbert was incredible, but it somehow left me underwhelmed with the Chargers offense. I’d feel better if Herbert didn’t have to place perfect balls into tight coverage to no-name receivers in order for the Chargers to score. Maybe things will be different when Keenan Allen comes back, but he’s out this week. So I’ll gladly take the Chiefs here. Prediction: Chiefs win 31-24 Jets at Browns: Jemp: Browns, Reeb: Browns, Pep: Jets, Screw: Browns So it seems like the Jets are right back to being the worst team in football. Well I’m sure Zach Wilson will save their season when he returns. Then again, Joe Flacco is 17-3 against the Browns so maybe he has their number. Sure, he hasn’t played them since 2018 and it was always with the Ravens who have a slightly better organizational track record than either of these teams, but nevermind that. It would be great to see something out of the Jets, and I don’t completely count them out of this one. The Ravens didn’t consistently move the ball against the defense, as their touchdowns mostly came off of big plays, which I doubt Jacoby Brissett is hitting in this one. But the offense was miserable, so I’m taking the Browns. Prediction: Browns win 17-14 Commanders at Lions: Jemp: Lions, Reeb: Lions, Pep: Lions, Screw: Lions This is just insulting. Carson Wentz throws 4 touchdown passes and everyone is taking the Lions? Sure, he had a few terrible Wentz plays, but this offense legitimately looks pretty good. Even Curtis Samuel is alive. Prediction: Commanders win 200-0 Buccaneers at Saints: Jemp: Bucs, Reeb: Bucs, Pep: Bucs, Screw: Bucs It wasn’t all that pretty, but both these teams got it done on Sunday. The Saints put themselves in a big deficit, which is right where you want to be against the Falcons. However, their offense seemed to get rolling after that. Jarvis Landry looked like ol’ reliable and Michael Thomas reminded everyone that he used to be the best receiver in football. The defense was less impressive, but I guess any defense would have trouble with Marcus Mariota and Cordarrelle Patterson. This week all they have is Tom Brady, who they always seem to dominate, so I’m lone wolfing the Saints. Prediction: Saints win 17-16 Panthers at Giants: Jemp: Panthers, Reeb: Giants, Pep: Giants, Screw: Giants This game is surprisingly tough. I think the Panthers are the overall more talented team without hesitation, but the Giants just seem to have new life with Brian Daboll at the helm. Something you can’t say for the Panthers and Matt Rhule. Saquon Barkley looks like the player we expected him to be 3 years ago when he was coming off the monster rookie year. That could make the Giants fun, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they stole a few more games, but I’ll take the Panthers. They have more talent on defense and I expect Christian McCaffrey to be more involved this week. Prediction: Panthers win 24-21 Patriots at Steelers: Jemp: Steelers, Reeb: Patriots, Pep: Steelers, Screw: Steelers It’s weird to see Patriots Steelers on the schedule, and think “ew, gross”. The Steelers showed a lot in a gritty win, but let’s be honest, they won the turnover battle 5-0 and it still took overtime and a couple missed kicks for them to pull out the win. Not to mention, they are now down their best player on each side of the ball. I know the Patriots looked like sh** on Sunday, but I have to think Belichick still has some tricks up his sleeve. Prediction: Patriots win 19-10 Colts at Jaguars: Jemp: Colts, Reeb: Colts, Pep: Colts, Screw: Colts So maybe Matt Ryan isn’t the answer to make the Colts a contender? All the hype of him being a huge upgrade on Carson Wentz, and he can’t even beat the Texans. Jonathan Taylor was great as usual, and Michael Pittman had his anticipated breakout, and yet the Colts flopped hard. Granted, I think Matty Ice will be fine and should take the Colts to an AFC South title, but that’s more of an indictment on the rest of the division. For instance, the Jags were gifted way too many opportunities last week and failed to capitalize on any of them. Even the most pessimistic of Washington fans can’t have been that worried when the Jags took the lead. The best thing you can say about the Jags is that they probably won’t get the number one pick again. But they aren’t winning this week. Prediction: Colts win 31-21 Dolphins at Ravens: Jemp: Ravens, Reeb: Ravens, Pep: Dolphins, Screw: Ravens I don’t know if I’d call the opener for the Mike McDaniel offense a huge success when they only mustered one offensive touchdown. Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle looked great but I’m not sure if using Waddle as a checkdown option and Tyreek as a jump ball specialist is the best way to maximize their potential. On the other side, I don’t know what to make of the Ravens. They dominated the Jets, but it’s the Jets, and they were totally reliant on the big play to move the ball. I don’t know if they are getting those plays against the Dolphins. But ultimately, I trust the Ravens more. Prediction: Ravens win 20-16 Falcons at Rams: Jemp: Rams, Reeb: Rams, Pep: Rams, Screw: Rams At what point in a Falcons game do you start thinking they are going to win? Maybe if they are up 35 in the fourth? The Rams might have looked bad in the opener, but I don’t think they’re allowing that many points to the Falcons. Marcus Mariota isn’t quite Josh Allen yet, and I have to imagine Sean McVay will figure things out for the offense. They’ve got to have someone catch the ball other than Cooper Kupp. Prediction: Rams win 34-10 Seahawks at 49ers: Jemp: 49ers, Reeb: 49ers, Pep: Seahawks, Screw: 49ers This one is not an easy game to pick. We expected the 49ers to be a contender coming into the year and the Seahawks to be a joke, but it’s the Seahawks who are lone atop the division at this point. Let’s also not forget that the NFC West flowchart has the Seahawks beating the 49ers (Seahawks > 49ers > Rams > Seahawks…etc.). However, it’s just hard to imagine Geno Smith going to 2-0 over this loaded 49ers team. Then again, it’s not that hard to imagine Geno outplaying Trey Lance, so maybe Pep fading the 49ers will work out for him again. Prediction: 49ers win 24-20 Bengals at Cowboys: Jemp: Bengals, Reeb: Bengals, Pep: Bengals, Screw: Bengals I know Bengals fans had a miserable Week 1, as you can ask Reeb the unpaid intern, but there are some encouraging signs. Losing a turnover battle 5-0 and still nearly winning the game is an impressive feat. They proved they can stay in any game no matter how poorly things are going. And against this Cowboys team, they might be able to lose the turnover battle 10-0 and still win. The Dallas offense was putrid on Sunday Night Football and that was with Dak Prescott leading the charge. Now they have Cooper Rush so I don’t know if they will do anything. Trevon Diggs might be the most likely Cowboy to get into the endzone this weekend, or for the foreseeable future. I think the Bengals get out of Jerryworld at 1-1. Prediction: Bengals win 31-0 Texans at Broncos: Jemp: Broncos, Reeb: Broncos, Pep: Broncos, Screw: Broncos I think Nathaniel Hackett should just start leaning into this and just kick field goals every time he gets the ball over mid field. I don’t care if it is first down on the first possession. If he’s in Texans territory, just let Brandon McManus have a shot. Why overthink it? But they did move the ball and if it weren’t for a few unlucky goalline gaffs, the Broncos would probably be 1-0. I think they take out the Texans here in Week 2. Prediction: Broncos win 31-17 Cardinals at Raiders: Jemp: Raiders, Reeb: Raiders, Pep: Raiders, Screw: Cardinals Not the best start for the Cardinals. Their defense was absolutely torched by Patrick Mahomes and co. and their offense seemed to rely way too heavily on Greg Dortch. Maybe Dortch will end up being a good player, but I can’t imagine that was their gameplan going into the year. The Raiders may have lost, but I think their biggest problem was actually Derek Carr, and I trust Derek Carr to turn things around. He might not always light the world on fire, but he rarely makes the kind of boneheaded mistakes he made last week. Davante Adams still looks like the stud he was in Green Bay, so I’m not too worried about the Raiders. Prediction: Raiders win 38-24 Bears at Packers: Jemp: Packers, Reeb: Packers, Pep: Packers, Screw: Packers This could not be better timing for Aaron Rodgers and the Packers. They might have struggled against the Vikings, but as Aaron isn’t afraid to tell us, he owns the Bears. And this should be one of the softer Bears defenses he’s played in quite a while. They won’t have a monsoon to hide behind this week (at least I assume they won’t, but I haven’t checked the weather), so I expect the Packers to rebound. I still don’t think Aaron Rodger will come out and throw 4+ touchdowns, but he’ll get the win. Prediction: Packers win 21-10 Titans at Bills: Jemp: Bills, Reeb: Bills, Pep: Bills, Screw: Bills Is it disrespectful that the Titans had the number one seed in the AFC last year and beat the Bills, and yet they are 9.5 point underdogs? And it’s only week 2. Maybe what is more disrespectful is that I’m happily smashing the Bills in that line. I know I wanted to temper expectations with the Bills last week, but they proved me wrong. The defense looked as good as ever, and while I’m still not gushing over the offensive playmakers, I am gushing about Josh Allen. He was phenomenal in the opener and it seemed like the Rams felt hopeless in trying to stop him. Mahomes was great as well, but Allen should be the early MVP favorite. Prediction: Bills win 38-17 Vikings at Eagles: Jemp: Vikings, Reeb: Vikings, Pep: Vikings, Screw: Vikings No better way to end week 2 than with the Jalen Reagor revenge game. Honestly, these could be two of the top contenders in the NFC. The Vikings looked even better than advertised with how well their defense played, and the Eagles showed off their new number 1 receiver in AJ Brown. But as good as AJ Brown is, Aaron Rodgers called Justin Jefferson the best player in football, and the Eagles just gave up 35 points to the Lions, so I’m taking the Vikings on the road. Prediction: Vikings 30-27 God I love Week 1 of the NFL Season. The playoffs are great and who doesn't love the Super Bowl, but there is nothing like the oasis of week 1 after the desert of the NFL offseason. All 32 teams are playing meaningful football, and if you squint just right, you can make a case for nearly all of them to be good. With all of our hopes yet to be dashed, let's pick some games. Bills at Rams: Jemp: Bills, Reeb: Bills, Pep: Bills, Screw: Bills Saved the best for first. The defending Super Bowl champions against the presumptive Super Bowl favorites. How could anyone pick against a team with Gabe Davis and Isaiah McKenzie starting for them? I feel like everyone penciled in the Bills for the Super Bowl after last year’s playoff run, but slowly through the offseason I feel like there have been more reasons to doubt it. Is there anything special from their offense besides Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs? Their offensive line is mediocre and somehow I don’t think Gabe Davis is now a superstar that is going to catch four TDs every week. I’m sure their offense will be good, but I don’t see it being the unstoppable juggernaut it was in the playoffs last year. Their defense is still fine, but with Tre’Davious White on the PUP, their cornerback group is a mess. And do we know if Von Miller can still put a full season together? But at least he gets a revenge game here. Well, I guess if he needs revenge on a team for getting him a Super Bowl ring and allowing him to get a mega contract elsewhere. Anyway, I’ll gladly lone wolf the champs at home. Prediction: Rams win 31-28 Saints at Falcons: Jemp: Saints, Reeb: Saints, Pep: Saints, Screw: Saints Ah, the long-awaited rematch between Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota. The two Heisman Trophy winners squared off in the National Championship game in 2015, and then played again in Week 1 of the NFL season after being drafted first and second overall. Fast forward to seven years later, and somehow, they are still both starting NFL quarterbacks. In the prior two matchups, Mariota absolutely demolished Jameis, but somehow I don’t think it happens this time, since he is now on the vastly inferior team… and he’s Marcus Mariota. But hey, maybe he’ll surprise everyone. Prediction: Saints win 27-0 49ers at Bears: Jemp: 49ers, Reeb: 49ers, Pep: Bears, Screw: 49ers So Trey Lance vs Justin Fields sounds mildly interesting right? Until you remember that the Bears are an embarrassment to the football world right now, and I can’t see any way for Trey Lance to screw this one up. He’s given a loaded team in a Shanahan offense against arguably the worst team in the league. Pep thinks the Bears can win this one, but I’m giving it to the niners. If the Bears somehow pull it off, then I’d be ready to go back to Jimmy G. Prediction: 49ers win 24-10 Steelers at Bengals: Jemp: Bengals, Reeb: Bengals, Pep: Bengals, Screw: Bengals I really thought I was done having to watch Mitch Trubisky play football. At least in meaningful NFL action. I really don’t understand this farce from the Steelers. Kenny Pickett was deemed the most NFL-ready of the QB prospects, he played well in the preseason, and it’s f***ing Mitch Trubisky. Won’t Pickett learn more from actually playing than sitting on the bench? Not to mention, he probably gives you the better chance to win right off the bat. Granted I don’t think either quarterback would beat the Bengals here. Prediction: Bengals win 34-17 Eagles at Lions: Jemp: Lions, Reeb: Eagles, Pep: Eagles, Screw: Eagles I remember last year when over half of us took the Lions to get their first win against the Eagles. Then they lost 44-6. But if I’ve learned anything from Hard Knocks, it is that this is a different Lions team. And Hard Knocks has never led anyone astray. Then again, the Eagles did load up this offseason and look ready to make a push. Is this the Dream Team again? Prediction: Eagles win 24-21 Patriots at Dolphins: Jemp: Dolphins, Reeb: Dolphins, Pep: Dolphins, Screw: Dolphins The Patriots have not had the best offseason. They lost their star cornerback JC Jackson and replaced him with… uh… no one? Guess the whole Malcolm Butler thing didn’t work out. Then their offense looks fairly similar personnel-wise, but you have Matt Patricia and Joe Judge trying to implement a new scheme. Surprisingly it hasn’t gone well. But, maybe they figure things out in season since they are the Patriots and have the greatest head coach of all time. I don’t think they will figure it out in Week 1 though, and we all know the Pats struggle in Miami. Tua will throw some 40 yard curl routes to Tyreek Hill and keep his undefeated streak against Belichick. Prediction: Dolphins win 20-13 Ravens at Jets: Jemp: Ravens, Reeb: Ravens, Pep: Ravens, Screw: Ravens Now here is a real revenge game. It feels like forever ago that Joe Flacco was replaced by Lamar Jackson, but now he gets his chance to prove to the Ravens that they made a huge mistake. Sure Lamar won an MVP and took the Ravens to three straight playoff appearances, but Flacco can make Baltimore forget all about that with this Week 1 upset. He’s got a full complement of weapons and what should be a much-improved defense. I’m almost actually talking myself into this, but only almost. Ultimately I think he falls short, probably well short. But if he were to pull it off, Baltimore would still be happy with their QB, but the Jets might not be. Prediction: Ravens win 31-21 Jaguars at Commanders: Jemp: Commanders, Reeb: Commanders, Pep: Commanders, Screw: Jaguars No Chase Young, no problem. Sure, the Jags are free of Urban Meyer and looking to rebound this year. Honestly, I’m a little skeptical, but it doesn’t matter this week because they are playing the Washington Football Team as they will forever be known in my heart. Prediction: Commanders win 100-0 Browns at Panthers: Jemp: Browns, Reeb: Panthers, Pep: Panthers, Screw: Panthers Another big revenge game here as Rashard Higgins has a score to settle with his former team. They could probably use him honestly as they are very thin at receiver. Between Donovan Peoples-Jones, David Bell, and Anthony Schwartz, they’ll need someone to step up if they want any chance of treading water while they wait for their quarterback. They also have holes on defense, a question mark at Center, and of course they have Jacoby Brissett as their starting quarterback. Granted, you could do worse at QB, but I think Baker has enough around him to be good this year. McCaffrey should be fully healthy, the o-line should be improved, and Robbie Anderson now has a more aesthetically pleasing first name. What more could you ask for? Prediction: Panthers win 27-20 Colts at Texans: Jemp: Colts, Reeb: Colts, Pep: Colts, Screw: Colts I feel like not many people had a better offseason than Matt Ryan. And it’s not because of anything he did, but the fact that everyone loves to dunk on Carson Wentz has sent Matty Ice’s stock soaring. I’m surprised that he isn’t getting MVP hype at this point. While I don’t think Ryan is any better than Wentz in a vacuum, I do think he is a better fit in this offense, and I think the Colts will end up winning this division. However, I do look forward to seeing if Davis Mills can show enough to keep this job into next season. I don’t think the Texans are playoff contenders, but just showing some promise from their younger players could spell success for them. Prediction: Colts win 29-20 Giants at Titans: Jemp: Titans, Reeb: Titans, Pep: Titans, Screw: Titans I’ll admit I’m interested to see what Brian Daboll can do for the Giants offense. Maybe he can make Saquon back into a superstar? Maybe he can make Kenny Golladay move again? Maybe he can turn Daniel Jones into Josh Allen? Or maybe not. On the other side we’ll get to see if Derrick Henry is back to his old self. If he’s anywhere close he should run right through this Giants defense. I could see the Giants stealing this if things come together for the offense, but I’ll play it safe for now and stick with the Titans. Prediction: Titans win 30-21 Packers at Vikings: Jemp: Vikings, Reeb: Packers, Pep: Vikings, Screw: Packers I can’t wait for this game. Maybe the unveiling of the Vikings new offense will be underwhelming, but I think Kevin O’Connell will unleash Kirk. And now the Jalen Reagor is in the mix this offense will be unstoppable. On the other hand I’m a bit torn on the Packers. Matt Lafleur and Aaron Rodgers have been an incredible combination, but can the really get it done with Allen Lazard as their number one receiver? I certainly think this will be a competitive one, but if the Vikings beat them in Minnesota last year, then they sure as hell can beat them this year Prediction: Vikings win 37-34 Chiefs at Cardinals: Jemp: Chiefs, Reeb: Chiefs, Pep: Chiefs, Screw: Chiefs Another outstanding game where we get to watch Kyler vs Mahomes. We’ll get to see what the Chiefs offense looks like without Tyreek Hill. My guess is that it will still be pretty good. I still think the Chiefs have plenty of weapons, definitely more than the Cardinals do without DeAndre Hopkins. I’m a pretty big fan of Kyler, but I think I trust Patrick Mahomes a little bit more, and I expect the Chiefs to show that they are as good as ever. Prediction: Chiefs win 38-24 Raiders at Chargers: Jemp: Chargers, Reeb: Chargers, Pep: Chargers, Screw: Raiders This might be the best game of the week. Bills Rams is going to be great, but what I love about this matchup is that it is two teams who loaded up this offseason and we now get to see how well it worked out. And both of these teams were already pretty good, but the additions make them that much more dangerous. The Raiders added the best receiver in football, while the Chargers shored up their defense, adding JC Jackson and Khalil Mack. Both these teams are absolutely AFC contenders, but an early divisional win will mean a lot in this loaded AFC West. I expect another nail-biter like their game at the end of last year, but I have to go with the Chargers. I see Justin Herbert having an MVP type year. Prediction: Chargers win 35-34 Buccaneers at Cowboys: Jemp: Cowboys, Reeb: Bucs, Pep: Bucs, Screw: Bucs I know it’s been a weird offseason for Tom Brady, but I trust him to show out when the games start. It looks like Chris Godwin is going to play, which means he’ll have a receiving corps of Mike Evans, Godwin, Russell Gage, and Julio Jones. Sure, Julio Jones might be washed, but he’d still be the unquestioned WR2 if he was on the Cowboys. We used to think of the Cowboys as a loaded offense, but now I don’t think they are even good. Maybe Micah Parsons and the defense can carry them, but I don’t think I believe in that either. It’s hard for defenses to repeat, and while Parsons will surely be great again, I’m not sure about the unit as a whole. Bucs -2.5 seems like a lock to me. Prediction: Buccaneers win 27-16 Broncos at Seahawks: Jemp: Broncos, Reeb: Broncos, Pep: Broncos, Screw: Broncos What a way to close out the week. Russel Wilson returns to Seattle and we’ll get to see if the Broncos can fulfill all the potential we’ve thought they’ve had in the past few years. Being stuck in the quarterback wasteland has halted the development of potential stars like Courtland Sutton and Jerry Jeudy, but now they have their man. I know opinions vary on Russ nowadays, but there is no denying that he’s the best they’ve had since Peyton Manning’s MVP form. I know everyone feels like they have to pick one of the teams in the AFC West to suck, but I honestly believe all four teams are really good, and things will play out that way. If they all go 3-3 in division, they could easily all end up with good records. Even going 2-4 in division won’t kill a team. And we all think the Broncos are able to get over Geno Smith and company. Prediction: Broncos 24-20 Here are the standings:
Screw: 193-103 Reeb: 190-106 Pep: 178-118 Jemp: 171-125 Alx: 166-130 Well we don’t have any drama in the pick title as the final standings are already determined. I know you all usually watch the Super Bowl with that in mind, but I guess you’ll have to find some other drama to entertain you this time around. Let’s pick Super Bowl LVI. Rams vs Bengals: Jemp: Rams, Reeb: Bengals, Pep: Commanders, Screw: Bengals It’s finally here. We get to see the Bengals try for their first Lombardi Trophy. Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase are no strangers to playing for a championship, but I don’t expect this game to go as smoothly as the one two years ago. Now they have to play against a defense with Aaron Donald, Jalen Ramsey, and Von Miller. Jalen Ramsey is great, but Chase is good enough to make plays against anyone, and he can’t cover Chase and Tee Higgins at the same time. The bigger concern is blocking Aaron Donald. The Bengals o-line rebounded nicely after giving up 9 sacks to the Titans, but the Chiefs pass rush isn’t quite as good as the Rams. On the other side of the ball, the Rams offense needs to play better than they did last week. And it won’t be easy against a defense that bottled up Patrick Mahomes in the second half of the AFC championship game. Stafford has proven he is a considerable upgrade over Jared Goff, but being good enough to win them a Super Bowl is another story. If it comes down to quarterback play, I think Joe Burrow gets it done. If it comes down to coaching, I’d have to give the edge to Sean McVay. But ultimately, I think this game is so close that it comes down to a final kick. And there is only one choice for the best kicker in this game. Prediction: Bengals win 27-24 Here are the standings:
Screw: 191-101 Reeb: 188-104 Pep: 178-114 Jemp: 169-123 Alx: 164-128 Alright, it’s down to Reeb and Screw for the title, and Reeb needs to get both right here to stay in it. Let’s hope this week of football is as good as last week. And let’s pick some games. Bengals at Chiefs: Jemp: Chiefs, Reeb: Bengals, Pep: Chiefs, Screw: Chiefs The Bengals are coming off two clunky wins, but they were playoff wins nonetheless, so I think Reeb and all of Cincinnati will take it. On the other side, Patrick Mahomes just came out on top of one of the greatest quarterback duels I’ve ever witnessed. It seems like a lifetime ago that we were wondering what was wrong with the Chiefs offense. And yet, their defense continues to allow other great quarterbacks to keep up with Mahomes. Last week it was Josh Allen, and the last time Joe Burrow saw them, he took advantage in a big way. Now we get to see him in the biggest game of his life. I’m guessing they won’t try to leave their cornerbacks on an island with Jamarr Chase and Tee Higgins again, but I still think Joey Burrow can carve up this defense. Sure, I think the Chiefs probably come out on top, but I’m trying to get out of last place, so why not take a chance on the most fun Bengals team of my lifetime, and probably everyone else’s lifetime as well. Prediction: Bengals win 37-35 49ers at Rams: Jemp: Rams, Reeb: 49ers, Pep: 49ers, Screw: Rams Can Sean McVay finally conquer the thorn in his side? While I might be mixing metaphors, there is no mixing up this lopsided matchup. For whatever reason, Shanahan has owned McVay, and now they meet in the playoffs for the first time. It does feel like this is the time for Sean McVay to get over the hump. He has the better defense and the better quarterback, and it feels like his time to go to the Super Bowl. Then again, maybe it’s time for Shanahan and Jimmy G to go to another one. Jimmy does have two Super Bowl rings so he just knows how to win in these spots. Matthew Stafford is busy trying to scrape together a couple of playoff wins, so I’ll stick with history. Again, not sure I really believe it, but there is something weird about this matchup that favors the 49ers. Prediction: 49ers win 27-24 Here are the standings:
Screw: 187-97 Reeb: 182-102 Pep: 176-108 Jemp: 165-119 Alx: 160-124 It’s starting to look like a two man race between Reeb and Screw after a bad week for Pep, but he’s going all out this week to get back into things. Let’s pick some games. Bengals at Titans: Jemp: Titans, Reeb: Bengals, Pep: Titans, Screw: Bengals Well we have the red-hot Bengals visiting the forgotten Titans. However, it’s the Titans who are healthier than they’ve been since the beginning of the season, and they are likely getting Derrick Henry back. D’onta Foreman did actually do a solid job of filling in, but even a Derrick Henry at 50% speed is probably faster than Foreman. I expect a big workload for Henry as usual, and for the Titans to work their play action off of it. Joe Burrow and Jamarr Chase are phenomenal, but the Titans have the better defense, running game, and coaching staff. Unless the Bengals passing attack goes off, I don’t see them winning this one. A lot of close games this week, but this is the one I’m most confident in, sorry Reeb. Although you might be relieved considering my picks record. Prediction: Titans win 27-20 49ers at Packers: Jemp: Packers, Reeb: Packers, Pep: 49ers, Screw: Packers Aaron Rodgers looks like he is going to win another MVP this year, but he has never beaten the 49ers in the playoffs. In his 3 games, he’s thrown 5 touchdowns and 3 interceptions, which isn’t horrible, but not nearly up to his regular season standards. And of course the 0-3 record isn’t great either. Granted, the two losses to the Jim Harbaugh Colin Kaepernick 49ers probably don’t indicate anything about this matchup, but the most lopsided matchup was the 2019 NFC championship where Jimmy G took him down by handing the ball off really well to Raheem Mostert. Now he’ll be handing it off to Elijah Mitchell and sometimes Deebo Samuel and I think that might be enough to take down these Packers. I was initially worried about their defense, but now it looks like Nick Bosa and Fred Warner will both be able to play. I think that’s enough for the 49ers to edge out the Pack. Prediction: 49ers win 27-24 Rams at Buccaneers: Jemp: Rams, Reeb: Rams, Pep: Bucs, Screw: Rams This is the hardest game for me to pick. On the one hand, the Bucs are all sorts of banged up. Mike Evans is essentially their only healthy receiver, they have two pro-bowl lineman questionable for the game, and their top two running backs are coming off of injury. The Rams are just hitting their stride, looking like one of the best defenses in the NFL with Aaron Donald, Jalen Ramsey, and Von Miller all playing their best football. The offense is getting everyone involved with OBJ catching touchdowns and Cam Akers looking fully healthy. And of course they have the receiving triple crown winner in Cooper Kupp. But one the other hand, the Bucs have Tom Brady. So I’m taking the Bucs. Prediction: Buccaneers win 26-24 Bills at Chiefs: Jemp: Chiefs, Reeb: Chiefs, Pep: Bills, Screw: Bills While the other games are good, this certainly had to be the game to close out the week. Everyone knows there is no better game than the Bills coming off a perfect game, going to Kansas City to face the opponent who trounced them in this building a year ago. The Bills got some revenge in the regular season when the Chiefs were struggling, but we all know that the playoffs are all that matters for these two teams. Honestly, I think the Bills are the better team when they are at their best. If they play like they did last week, there probably isn’t a team in the league that can beat them. But if there is, it’s these Kansas City Chiefs. While I called the Bills’ offensive performance perfect, even they couldn’t match the explosiveness that the Chiefs have. The Bills put up 47 points last week by scoring touchdowns on every drive they have, but the Chiefs can do that in the blink of an eye. Patrick Mahomes threw 5 touchdowns in under 11 minutes of game time last week. This is truly a battle of the Titans, and not the ones from Tennessee. I can’t wait to see it, but I think I have to take the Chiefs at home. Prediction: Chiefs win 38-35 Here are the standings:
Screw: 175-97 Reeb: 174-98 Pep: 170-102 Jemp: 157-115 Alx: 150-122 So technically I'm 25 back of Screw with 26 points up for grabs since playoffs are double points. But Reeb already has two different picks than Screw this week so I'd still just lose to Reeb if I picked every game right and Screw didn't. So I guess I'll just pick what I think since that's been working so well for me. Let's pick some games. Raiders at Bengals: Jemp: Bengals, Reeb: Bengals, Pep: Raiders, Screw: Bengals What seemed like a season to forget for the Raiders has a chance to turn into a playoff run. And a playoff win would certainly trump racism and manslaughter. It must be weird for Bengals fans that it isn’t their team that is getting into off the field issues. But maybe that’s what they need to change their playoff luck. And being the far more talented team should also help. I know it’s supposed to be cold, but that shouldn’t be enough to slow down Burrow and Chase and co. Then again, maybe Maxx Crosby and Yannick Ngakoue can. Maybe that will be enough to keep it close enough to where the Raiders can use some of that 4th quarter/OT magic. But I have to stick with the Bengals here. Prediction: Bengals win 24-20 Patriots at Bills: Jemp: Bills, Reeb: Patriots, Pep: Patriots, Screw: Bills Patriots Bills round 3. Looks like we might get another weather game here too. Probably not the gusting winds of last time, but the forecast calls for intense cold with a slight chance of snow. This certainly favors the Pats, but the Bills seem to have discovered a running game now too. Plus, Mac Jones has been struggling lately, and I don’t think they can get away with him throwing 3 passes again in this one. Then again, Bill Belichick has played this team twice and might have them figured out. I think he cooks something up to take out his division rivals. Prediction: Patriots win 20-17 Eagles at Buccaneers: Jemp: Eagles, Reeb: Bucs, Pep: Bucs, Screw: Bucs I’m looking forward to see how these Bucs fair in the playoffs now that they are so low on weapons. But let’s be honest, are Breshad Perriman and Tyler Johnson any worse than Jalen Reagor? The offenses are actually pretty similar in talent other than the major edge the Bucs have at QB. This might be controversial, but I think picking Tom Brady in the playoffs is usually a good idea. Prediction: Buccaneers win 34-14 49ers at Cowboys: Jemp: Cowboys, Reeb: 49ers, Pep: 49ers, Screw: 49ers I’m sure the Cowboys are feeling great about themselves after putting up a 50-burger against the Eagles backups. But I don’t think that will cut it against the 49ers, who had an incredible comeback against the Rams to get them into the playoffs. I think the Rams are a much better team than the Cowboys, so I don’t expect the 49ers to need a comeback to win this one. The Cowboys are capable of an explosion, but they’re also capable of a dud, and those tend to come up for the Cowboys in the playoffs. Prediction: 49ers win 38-17 Steelers at Chiefs: Jemp: Chiefs, Reeb: Steelers, Pep: Chiefs, Screw: Chiefs Ben Roethlisberger might have been trying to be sarcastic when he said the Steelers suck, but take it from PFJ: it didn’t land. Mostly because everyone knows it to be the truth. Sure, this team has TJ Watt who just tied the sack record, but even with that their defense hasn’t been good. And we all know their offense is a slog to watch. They were just demolished by the Chiefs a few weeks ago and I don’t expect anything different here. Prediction: Chiefs win 34-14 Cardinals at Rams: Jemp: Rams, Reeb: Rams, Pep: Cardinals, Screw: Rams Glad we can get a Cardinals Rams Monday Nighter to close out Super Wild Card weekend. It’s always strange to get division matchups in the playoffs. Neither of these teams is entering the playoffs with much momentum, as last week they both took Ls from the other two NFC West teams. It feels like the Cardinals are just one of those teams that I can’t figure out. I thought they were playing over their heads early in the season, and then just when I get on board, they start to lose. Now I’m starting to doubt them again, so maybe this is where they turn things around. Prediction: Rams win 27-17 |
